Slack

I led the design of workflow analytics, an addition to Slack analytics dashboards intended for Slack Admins. This tool provides Slack Admins within organizations with a simple means to comprehend and measure the adoption and utilization of workflows, enabling them to justify costs, identify inactive workflows, and effectively manage them.

Understanding Workflows

Some Context…

What are Slack Workflows?

03

Have you ever joined a Slack channel and seen an automated message? Or seen a feedback form in Slack? Or a reminder to sign up for a presentation? Behind that is a Workflow! They are a sequence of custom steps and actions connected to a Slack channel which helps automate routine tasks.

Examples

An example of a workflow in Slack created to onboard new users.

An example of a workflow created to log PTO requests.

Problem Statement

Admins did not have a way to quantify Workflow usage

04

Workflows are a significant component of premium expenses for organizations using Slack, a lack of a means to quantify the value will mean Slack Admins not having a way to justify the cost and subsequently slack losing customer retention.

Research - User Interviews

What challenges did Orgs face with quantifying Workflow usage?

05

I wanted to understand what challenges these organizations faced when trying to quantify the usage of workflows in their organization, the current solutions they were implementing to solve this, and what additional metrics they needed.

From user interviews with

15 Slack admins , from 7 distinct companies on Paid enterprise plans

Here’s what I discovered and solutions I proposed
